Apply for EA Sweden Summer Impact Projects Program

Build Impact This Summer: Propose Your Project to EA Sweden

Effective Altruism Sweden is excited to announce our Summer Impact Projects Program for 2025! This year, we’re taking a different approach. Instead of offering predefined internship roles, we’re launching an open call for motivated individuals to propose their own summer projects aligned with effective altruism and the Swedish community.

This is a unique opportunity designed to:

  • Develop your skills: Gain hands-on experience working on problems or projects relevant to tackling the world’s most pressing issues.
  • Enable meaningful contributions: Use your talents to support the work of EA Sweden or contribute valuable insights or resources to the broader EA community.
  • Offer flexibility and empowerment: We provide a supportive framework with limited constraints, allowing you to take ownership of your project and work in a way that suits you best.

About the Opportunity: Your Project, Your Impact

Think of this as less of a traditional internship and more of a summer project lab. We believe promising individuals often have unique insights and ideas. This program provides a platform to explore those ideas, test hypotheses, and create tangible value, whether that’s improving EA Sweden’s operations or pursuing an independent project that benefits the wider community.

We are looking for proactive individuals eager to dedicate their summer (or part of it) to making a difference. It’s an exploratory platform designed for mutual benefit and learning.

Who Should Apply?

We encourage applications from:

  • University students (undergraduate or postgraduate) or recent graduates
  • Entry-level young professionals
  • Individuals with a demonstrated understanding of and interest in effective altruism principles.
  • Temporary unemployed professionals.

Ideal candidates are:

  • Proactive and self-directed: Able to take initiative and manage their own project.
  • Impact-focused: Genuinely motivated to contribute effectively.
  • Collaborative and communicative: Willing to engage with the EA Sweden team and potentially the broader community.
  • Curious and open-minded: Eager to learn and refine their approach.

What Can You Propose? Be Creative!

We welcome a wide range of project proposals. Your idea could focus on strengthening EA Sweden, contributing to a specific EA cause area, building community resources, or something entirely different. The key is that the project is well-defined, feasible within the summer period (up to 3 months), and aligned with the broad goals of effective altruism.

Crucially, the examples below are just illustrations to spark your thinking. We strongly encourage you to propose projects based on your own interests, skills, and ideas about what could be impactful.

Examples of potential project types:

  • Improving EA Sweden Operations:
    • CRM Enhancement: Conduct a deep clean-up of our contact management system (e.g., Airtable), identify bottlenecks, and propose/implement automation for better tracking of members, contacts, and tailored communication (like newsletter segmentation).
    • Event Operations Toolkit: Develop a comprehensive set of standardised templates, checklists, and best-practice guides for running high-quality EA Sweden events (e.g., retreats, workshops, meetups, career fairs), making them easier to replicate and scale.
  • Outreach & Content Creation:
    • EA Sweden Podcast Miniseries: Conceptualise, plan, record, and edit a short series of podcast episodes interviewing Swedish or international EA-aligned individuals on specific topics, personal journeys, or key EA concepts.
    • Targeted Article Series: Research and write a series of articles on a specific pressing global problem (e.g., AI safety implications for Swedish policy, pandemic preparedness infrastructure in the Nordics), tailored for publication on a specific relevant forum, blog, or media outlet.
  • Community Building & Independent Projects:
    • Pilot EA Introduction Program in a New City: Design and potentially pilot a scalable model for launching and running an EA introductory fellowship or discussion group in a Swedish city currently lacking a significant EA presence.
    • Focused Research Output: Conduct targeted research on an EA-relevant topic and aim to produce a publishable output, such as a blog post series for the EA Forum, a detailed report, or even the groundwork for an academic paper (within the timeframe).

Important Project Considerations:

  • Feasibility: The project scope should realistically be achievable within the summer internship period (max 3 months).
  • Specificity: Your proposal should clearly outline the goals, activities, timeline, and expected outputs of your project.
  • Alignment: The project should align with EA principles and be appropriate for a non-partisan, non-profit organisation like EA Sweden. Projects should not engage in restricted political activities.

What We Offer: Terms and Support

  • Duration: Flexible, up to 3 months during the summer (roughly June-August/September). Start and end dates can be discussed.
  • Format & Pace: We are open to various arrangements! You can work in-person at our Stockholm office (Sveavรคgen 76), fully remotely, or hybrid. The pace can be full-time or part-time, depending on your availability and the project scope.
  • Reimbursement: Successful applicants will receive a reimbursement equivalent to the Swedish CSN student support level, which is currently 13,500 SEK per month (pre-tax), pro-rata for part-time work. We offer additional benefits, including an occupational pension during the period of your work.
  • Eligibility: You must be at least 18 years old and either an EU/EEA citizen or possess the legal right to work in Sweden for the duration of the project.
  • Mentorship & Connection: Access to the EA Sweden team for guidance, feedback, and connection to the broader EA community.
  • Number of Positions: We are open to supporting any number of projects โ€“ including potentially none โ€“ based entirely on the quality and fit of the proposals and applicants received.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications will be primarily evaluated on:

  1. Project Proposal: The clarity, specificity, feasibility, and potential impact of your proposed project idea.
  2. Applicant Fit: Your demonstrated understanding of EA, relevant skills or willingness to learn, proactivity, and suitability for the self-directed nature of this opportunity.
